When thinking about the next categories for this Advent series I am joining fellow bloggers to post, this morning taking communion came to mind. Because of Jesus coming the first time, He invites us to take communion with Him, in remembrance of Him.
One of my local liquor stores stocks communion wine. It is Kosher and blackberry flavored. I have a little cup that I pour it into. (It is actually one of the plastic 20 ml. AccuCups that comes with a bottle of cough syrup.) I take the crusts from a loaf of bread and break them into small pieces, and let them air dry until they are hard. Then I am prepared when I feel the need to take communion. I read once that it is the participation of two lives being poured into one cup, and we each take a piece of one loaf and become part of the loaf.
Beni Johnson, the late wife of pastor Bill Johnson, wrote a book on the subject. The following is from that book.
Communion should be taken with thankfulness, somberness and celebration. As I take the bread and the wine, I consciously bring all three of these thoughts into my moment of remembrance. Obviously, we should all be beyond thankful for God sending His Son. And the fact that Jesus said “yes”—coming to earth as a man and staying up on the cross on the day He was crucified—is a stunning reality. It is worthy of our thankfulness.
In addition to gratitude, I try to take a moment and connect with the physical pain and, most devastating, the abandonment that Jesus felt when His Father had to turn His back on His son due to the heavy, horrible sin that Jesus was carrying. Taking that moment to experience the somberness of remembrance is important in keeping our hearts connected to how much He loved us. Finally, we come to Communion with a heart of celebration because Jesus died and He rose again on the third day. Taking the sacrament, we are celebrating that—once and for all—the great sacrifice was made that shifted the atmosphere forever.
Taking communion is a tool of warfare. Communion is powerful. It is aligning ourselves with the reality of Christ crucified and resurrected. Sin and sickness have been defeated. If we grab on to this power, there is breakthrough available in every area of our lives: freedom and salvation, life and healing.
One of my favorite thoughts on taking communion is that, every time we take communion, we remind the devil that he has lost. That is one powerful tool. My husband says, “The devil only has power in our lives where we give him permission.” When we take communion, we actually say to the devil, “You can’t have control of my life because you’ve lost. I’m pulling your source of power.”
Partaking of communion aligns me with Christ and I am proclaiming the reality of heaven over every area of my life. And the best part is the devil has to watch and listen as I celebrate the power of Jesus in my life!
To me, there is nothing more intimate than communing with God. Communion helps me focus on what Jesus came to do, and I need to express my love to Him through this act. I will remember that Jesus said yes in coming to earth during this 2025 Advent season and express my gratitude for that, for now and for all eternity.

Communion is a perfect complement to Advent, Cindi. I used to order communion supplies on Amazon when I led our weekly church service at the Dallas homeless outreach I worked at previously. Communion is an excellent way to focus our hearts and minds on Christ. Thanks for this wonderful ADVENT2025 offering, Cindi!

Jesus made it simple. He said we are doing this in remembrance of Him and showing His death until He comes.

We often think of communion in conjunction with Christ’s resurrection, but it certainly fits for His Advent, as well! What a way to think outside the box, Sister Super-C! 2025 mega-bonus points to you.🤗

Communion wirh God tells the devil he has lost…👑 if only everyone got this! Just thinking, we’re in the Era of Grace, and how fine the lines are between Now & Eternity. Praying with all my heart, this season more than ever before, that hearts will open to Christ.
Thankyou for your precious share
Happy Advent🍃🌷🍃

From the Didache (second-century document): “As this broken bread was scattered on the mountains, and gathered together became one, so may Thy Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into Thy kingdom; for Thine is the glory and the power through Jesus Christ for ever.” Communion brings us all together.
