Pregnant Pause

I’m going to share the stories of two pregnant pauses in the Bible. And yes my friends, math is involved! A pregnant pause is the silence that occurs that leaves everyone who bore witness to the event speechless. It is also defined a a pause that gives the impression that it will be followed by something significant.

The first pause begins in Genesis and continues into Exodus. Jacob/Israel and his family settle in Egypt. 430 years later they left for the Promised Land. “The people of Israel had lived in Egypt for 430 years. In fact, it was on the last day of the 430th year that all of the Lord’s forces left the land.” (Ex. 12:40-41 [NLT])

The second pause is the gap between the Old and New Testament. The final book in the Old Testament is Malachi. It was written in 430 B.C. Then four centuries and no word from God. Nothing, nada, zip. It was the pregnant pause.

Some Bible scholars have calculated that Jesus was born 400 years after the book of Malachi was written. Then thirty years pass and Jesus begins his ministry. 430 years and the deliverance begins!

Moses was the deliverer for the Israelites out of Egypt. At that time, even though the Egyptians oppressed the Israelites, the more they multiplied and spread. The Pharaoh gave an order to the midwives, saying when they helped the Hebrew women give birth, watch as they deliver. If the baby is a boy, kill him, and if it is a girl, let her live. But the midwives feared God more than the Pharaoh, and refused to obey his orders. They allowed the boys to live too. So then Pharaoh gave the order to all his people to throw every newborn boy into the Nile River. ( see Ex. 1:12-17)

Moses was born during this time. His mother hid him for three months. She then made a basket of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it. She put the him in the basket and put him in the reeds along the bank of the Nile. So she did follow the letter of the law. (Gotta love women! She put him in the Nile alright!)

She had the sister of Moses watch and see what happened. The daughter of the Pharaoh saw the baby and said, this must be one of the Hebrew children, and yet she saved him and adopted him as her own son. (See Ex. 2:2-10) Once again, gotta love women! She knew it was a Hebrew baby boy, knew her father had wanted them all killed, and saved him anyway and made him her own son.

Moses was saved to become the deliverer of his people, escaping death by living in Egypt, literally right in the heart of Egypt, in the Pharaoh’s own home! When Jesus was born and after the Wise men visited, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told them to flee to Egypt and to stay there until told to return, because King Herod is going to search for Jesus to kill him. (see Matt. 2:13-15) So Jesus too was saved to become the Deliverer of all people, by escaping death and living in Egypt.

So my post has two pregnant women who had significant roles to play in giving birth to deliverers, as the Bible shares with us two pregnant pauses of 430 years followed by something significant. So while it might seem like a long time of waiting for prayers to be answered in your life, when it seems God is silent, just know, that God is giving birth to your deliverance and you don’t have to wait 430 years either, because of what Jesus has already done on the cross for you. So be speechless by what you are going to witness knowing God has something significant coming just for you!

    2. Oh Renee, yes it’s hard, but it’s worth it. And what I love about the Lord is that He gives us nudges, helping us wait and endure the process!

      1. I so agree! What would we do without His gentle nudges and confirmations? And what is so amazing is I read this after already making a comment on another post about some things being unbelievable that must be told, like Mary, as a virgin, having a baby and Moses parting the Red Sea! God is amazing! And again, this post was also truly amazing! 🙌

  9. Love this post!!! As you know, I have been doing several posts that link together the Old Testament stories with the New Testament stories. The foreshadowing and mirroring is astounding. This is another example. Powerful truth! Powerful God! And you helped us gain a powerful application for our lives! Bless you!

  14. Very interesting read. I’ve shared this with my wife. I don’t believe I had seen the relationship between the 430 years in Egypt and the 430 years before Christ. Nicely done. Thank you for this!
