Shalom “… make ‘peace’ your life motto. Practice being at peace with everyone.” (Ps. 34:14 [TPT])

The Passion Translation further explains shalom in the footnote for this verse: “This word much more than peace. It means wholeness, wellness, well-being, safe, happy, favor, completeness, to make peace, peace offering, secure, to prosper, to be victorious, to be content, tranquil, quiet, and restful. The pictographic symbols for the word shalom (shin, lamed, vav, mem) reads ‘Destroy the authority that binds to chaos.’ The noun shalom is derived from the verbal root shalam, which means ‘to restore,’ in the sense of replacing or providing what is needed in order to make someone or something whole and complete. So shalom is used to describe those of us who have been provided all that is needed to be whole and complete, and break off all authority that would attempt to bind us to chaos.”

That whole description reminds me of the y’all part, the catch-phrase of the Southern United States. Having visited that part of the country, life seems to move at a slower, more peaceful pace. Sitting on a porch swing sipping sweet tea. Where the motto is “what’s the hurry?” A style of living that exudes shalom y’all. From a young age you are also taught to have good manners.

We can have those same Southern manners in our daily life. Be polite. Say yes ma’am and no sir. Call folks ‘Miss’ and ‘Mr’. Say please and thank you. Say ‘bless your heart.’ Speak with a southern drawl (only if you can pull it off effectively!) Be helpful. Be charming, kind, witty, and considerate to everyone we encounter. Do onto others as you would have them do onto you, without expecting reciprocation. Doing all of the above out of courtesy and respect.

I think we all need to make this more of a part of our daily routine, because the world needs more civility, politeness, and peace. By doing so we can provide what is needed to restore others to wholeness and completeness, and stop the behaviors that are trying to bind us to chaos. We need more peace and less chaos, don’t you agree?

So shalom y’all, peace out, and y’all come back now, you hear?

  3. Love this! It’s been a long time since I’ve studied the word, Shalom. And reading that definition brought back many wonderful memories and tough lessons. Thank you. I needed the reminder–in the midst of my chaos.

  4. I totally agree! Kindness is the oil that lubricates the mechanisms of our relationships with others! We don’t need to all be alike and be homogenous in everything we think and believe. We need to make room for the differences of others! Excellent post, mam!

  8. I, too, certainly do agree with you, godstillspeakstoday, that we all need more peace than chaos. But let me share how I received it just the other day. While in the checkout line at Hobby Lobby, the customer just in front of me was paying for her items. Afterwards, she showed the cashier something on her cell phone which made the cashier shake her head ‘yes’, than the customer left the store. When it was my turn to check out, surprisingly, I received an unsolicited 20% off. The cashier than explained that the customer ahead of me allowed me to use her coupon which she had downloaded onto her phone. What a pleasant surprise. NOW, I MUST PAY IT FORWARD. And by the way, thank you for your ‘like’ on my latest blog entitled, “God Requires Us To do Some Research”. It was much appreciated.
