Walk up song

I’ve been watching the Boys of Summer plying their trade. That’s right, baseball and the Colorado Rockies. When the batter comes to the plate, they play the “walk up” song he has chosen. I Googled “walk up song” and came up with links to the “best ten walk up songs” and others. It is usually something the player likes and is catchy.

Which got me to thinking, what would my walk up song be? I chose Born Again by Austin French. When it is playing in my car I am dancing along, as best I can while driving and not getting into a wreck. I’ve got one hand on the wheel and the other is accentuating the hard beats. My head is bobbing and I am singing at the top of my lungs. Which would also make a great visual on television as I am walking up to the plate.

At one of the last Rockies games the announcers mentioned there was over 47,000 people in attendance. Not to mention the number of folks watching on television. That is quite the audience to hear such a song and to witness the joy of my testimony.

Singing is an integral part of praising our magnificent Lord. It is a part of my daily life and helps keep me focused on how wonderful He is and not my problems.

“ God has ascended amid the shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praise to out King, sing praises.” (Ps. 47:5 [NIV])

“The singers as well as the players on instruments shall say, All my springs (my sources of life and joy) are in you…” (Ps. 87:7 [AMP])

Not only am I singing to Him, He sings over me!

“He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zeph. 3:17 [NIV])

The Bible even included a walk up song story in its pages. It occurs in 2 Chronicles 20. It start with a big battle against God’s people. The king, Jehoshaphat, is terrified. So he gathers the people to pray. He begins with praise, then lays the problem before God. God replies, “You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you…do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out and face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.” (2 Chron. 20:17 [NIV])

The king’s response, more worship and praise! The next day they did what the Lord commanded. They walked up, took their positions and stood firm, while singing and praising their song. When they began singing and praising, the Lord set ambushes against the enemy forces, and they were totally destroyed. Not one soldier escaped alive. The result of the battle was great enrichment. It took three days to gather all the treasures found in the enemy camp.

So walk up songs are important. Not only does it give God the glory, He fights your battles, and you are enriched in the process.

“Yet I know that you are most holy; it’s indisputable, you are God-Enthroned, surrounded with songs living among the shouts of praise of your princely people.” (Ps. 22:3 [TPT])

The cool thing is that we get to sing our praises to Him for eternity too! I wondered what my walk up song will be when I arrive to worship at the throne of God when I get to heaven! I cannot wait to hear it! Knowing God, it is going to be amazing!

Here is your assignment, think what you would pick to be your walk up song and tell me in the comment section.

  1. As one who sings a little, I love this piece!!! I’ve always been around music, took piano lessons, played trombone (Not by choice!) freshman year & flute until senior year in high school. I’m that friend who suddenly breaks into song for no reason – now I’m anticipating my walk up song in eternity 💜💜💜

  2. I am a MASSIVE baseball fan. I enjoy hearing the songs each batter chooses, it gives a glimpse into their personality. Chris Tomlin’s “How Great Is Our God” has been my long-standing introduction song. For the odd moments/games just to change it up I would want the bridge from Crowder’s “My Victory” which says, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away our sins…” I cannot wait till we get to sing songs to our King, about our King and worship Him in all of His Holy Glory!

  3. Yes, yes, yes!!! Awesome post! I try to sing as I start getting ready each day. I usually sing little choruses that I remember and love – easy ones “I Love You Lord”, “All in All”, “He is Exalted”, “Jesus is Lord of All”, etc. etc. etc. Worshiping the Lord draws us into His presence and fills us with His strength so that we get out of the way so HE can fight our battles! I recently heard this one that goes along that same line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx6mfAgHDsY. Surrounded (Fight My Battles). I have heard other versions, but this one is my favorite because it blends together Psalm 23 with the chorus and brings it all back to praise as our weapon against the enemy. Some of the versions kind of miss this point. Thank you for putting a new song in my heart for the Lord today! Love you sister!
