For several days in a row I’ve been watching our Scottish Highland cattle grazing in our lower pasture while I am washing the eggs at my kitchen sink. One or two would begin to rub heads, frolic around, and then take off running up the hill. Then all the other cows began to think, “What’s going on over there? Hey, wait for me, I don’t want to miss out!” And they drop what they’re doing (eating grass) and start trotting up the hill. It is something to behold seeing 62 cows moving all together like that. The first time this happened, I too dropped what I was doing (washing eggs) and ran out to see if something was messing with the herd. Nope, nothing out there. Just an example of herd mentality.

As applied to humans, herd mentality describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather that on a rational basis. They make different decisions with the group than they would have individually.

As much as I love walking among my herd, in the rest of my life I choose not to be one of the herd. I daily make a commitment to obey what God wants me to do. Which is almost always different that what the world wants me to do.

I actually drew up a real contract between myself and God. (No, I’m not a lawyer, but I play one on TV.) I determined in my heart to obey the Spirit of God, no matter the cost. In doing so, when things have come up, I did not have to struggle to make a choice under pressure, because it was already settled in my heart and mind.

A phrase I heard recently on TV was be-all and end-all. It hit me to the core. Defined it designates something that is much more important than all other things. It is the most essential element in a person’s life, and there is no substitutes or alternatives that can take its place.

That is the all important, supreme aim of my life, to live in intimate contact with Jesus, who is my Be-all and End-all. To be single-minded in my focus, because the rest is really just noise.

“I want to live my life so close to him that he takes pleasure in my every prayer.” (Ps. 27:4b [TPT])

So if you agree, will you join my herd? No not the Highlands, the Jesus herd!

    2. Here’s what mine says: “I resolve to say ‘Yes Lord” to whatever you ask of me. I choose to surrender to You everyday. Instead of trying to control my life, I will trust in You and depend solely on You knowing You’ve got my back. Whatever fulfills Your purpose, that’s what I want too. I vow to be Your servant. May it be to me as you have said.”

  4. Not understanding the phrase “Be-all and end-all” led me to the dictionary. I got educated and learned it means: the central and all important part of my life, my existence; all important element, essential element, ultimate object. God’s children are His most important all important ultimate object of affection and pinnacle of Creation.

    My contract includes Ephesians 5:1-2 (NLT) which reads: “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you [Lady Diane] do, because you are his dear children. (vs2) Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God” and concludes with I am NOT giving up and will run with Christ.

    Running with 62 Scottish Highlands would be daring, thrilling, amazing, invigorating and foolish. I’ll run with Christ’s crowd! Powerful post, thank you~
