Okay boys and girls, clear off your desks and get ready for a pop quiz. (Like you are ever ready for a pop quiz!) I’m pretty sure those were the two scariest words we ever heard in school. You have no warning about what you will be quizzed on and your anxiety kicks into overdrive.

So here is your pop quiz. Can you name the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve disciples without having to look them up in your Bible? Nope, me either. I was thinking of this as I washed my hands the other day. In January 2020, Levi Lusko, pastor of Fresh Life Church, preached a sermon on washing your hands. (Who knew it was a prophetic foreshadowing of what was coming in March 2020 with the pandemic!)

In his sermon he mentioned that after you wash your hands, you are to shake them in the sink twelve times, before drying them off. So the other day, I thought it would be more fun while shaking to say the names from the above-mentioned pop quiz, than just saying the numbers to twelve.

Here are the twelve sons of Israel:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Joseph, and Benjamin.

Here are the names of the twelve disciples called by Jesus:

Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (the less), Thaddaeus, Simon (the zealot) and Judas Iscariot. Later the disciples replaced Judas Iscariot with Matthias to keep the number at twelve. So you can chose who you want to say as the last one.

Or you could pick something else and say the twelve days of Christmas. All will engage your brain.

The number twelve in the Bible typically means perfection or authority. And who is the picture of perfection and authority? God! He is omniscient, meaning He has infinite awareness, understanding, and insight. He has universal and complete knowledge of everything—past, present and future, all at the same time. It means He can never learn anything new, because He already knows it all. Nothing can surprise Him or take Him unaware. He is never caught off guard or blind-sided.

“Who could ever wrap their minds around the riches of God, the depth of his wisdom, and the marvel of his perfect knowledge? Who could ever explain the wonder of his decisions or search out the mysterious way he carries out his plans? For who has discovered how the Lord thinks or is wise enough to be the one to advise him in his plans? (Rom. 11:33-34 [TPT])

I remember when I was in my early twenties, I was young, bullet-proof, and knew everything! The saying is true, wisdom comes with age. As I got older, I realized how little I actually knew, and how I needed to completely rely on God and His help for each day.

What I’ve learned is, every day is a pop quiz. We can do our best to plan and prepare, but we never really know what is coming in the future, as 2020 has clearly shown us. It is comforting to know, really know, that we have Someone we can rely on to lead and guide us through our day, who knows what is coming and has a plan for us.

So here is the ultimate pop quiz that Jesus is asking you, that requires just a simple yes or no response. “Do you want to spend eternity with Me?”

And you don’t even have to clear off your desk to answer.

    2. Bartholomew is also referred to as Nathaniel and is the one who is known for saying, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46). Jesus a few verses later called Nathaniel a true Israelite and after that exchange, Nathaniel followed Jesus. Thanks in advance for letting me jump in, I have a soft spot for Nathaniel!

  7. This is a good reminder to practice all 24 names (sans Judas Iscariot) so when we meet them in Heaven, we don’t go, “um, what is your name again?” Maybe we’ll have perfect memories then. I’m excited about seeing what they all look like! What will really be amazing is all of the “little people” with fascinating stories to tell. I really want to ask Adam and Eve what it felt like to be kicked out of the Garden. It must have been a horrible feeling. Of the 12 sons of Jacob and the 12 apostles, I’m most interested in talking with John. I love his Gospel, his three letters, and the Revelation. BTW, I tried to “like” Tim McGee’s answer, “Yes,” but the system didn’t take it. Sign me up for “Yes,” also!

    2. Okay, the 12 tribes with 12,000 marked with the sign set apart as believers, and based on the premise of my post, that would be shaking my hands off in the sink 144,000 times. Say each shake is one second, 144,000 divided by 60 seconds in a minute, that would be 2400 minutes?! So I’d say my hands are really dry and I don’t need to use a towel!

      1. We feel the same. It really helps give us perspective and context for what Jesus was up against, not unlike today.
        Can you imagine what a day in Jesus’ day would look like NOW?!?
