Sometimes we all just need to take a break. A friend of mine told me that last week he went to Texas and engaged in some therapy, recoil therapy that is. He said that for a couple of days, he got to forget everything else and concentrate on exactly what he was doing there on the gun range. It was wonderfully relaxing in a way that nothing else is.
I have to agree. As a member of our local sportsmen association, it is nice to set up some targets on the various ranges and practice shooting. You are in the moment, concentrating on the task at hand, and everything else falls away for a little while.
It takes practice in order to get good, at anything. Especially when using firearms. You want to fully know the gun you are using and be safe with it. You stand firm, hold your position, take a deep breath, aim, then fire. It takes focus.
And boy have I been practicing! In order to remain safe, I know I have to fully know and arm myself with what the Word of God says about me. Then I stand firm, hold my position, take a deep breath, then fire by speaking His declarations and blessings over my life. In doing so, it helps me remain focused. Because I will not be moved from what I know.
Practice
“The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Phil. 4:9 [NASB])
Focus
“Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.” (1 Tim. 4:15 [NASB])
Declaring the blessings of God over myself, has been changing me. When negative emotions try to creep in, I fire off a blessing out loud. Just like with shooting, it takes practice before you hit the bullseye on the target at the 100 yard range. Same truth applies here. You must continue to speak, and then you believe the truth you are speaking, and before you know it, bullseye!
Picture this: You’re walking down the sidewalk and you catch movement out of the corner of you eye. You glance over your shoulder and are startled to see God’s blessings chasing you down and overtaking you. You are so amazed, you spread out your arms and legs, stand firm, brace yourself and wait for it to hit you. When it does it comes flooding over you, washing over you, blasts through you until you are overwhelmingly delighted by the absolute goodness of God. You are not only flooded, but His light is also shining through you. It was as if you had a bullseye on your back and God hit the target right in the center!
“And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you.” (Deut. 28:2 [NASB])
Speaking of the center of the bullseye, the best place to aim for and to remain in, is the center of God’s will.
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his purpose.” (Phil 2:13 [NIV])
The footnote on this verse says, “To will and to act means our intention, or faith, and our obedience cannot be separated.” The two go hand in hand.
“And he [God] made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ…” “In him we are also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will…” (Eph. 1: 9, 11 [NIV])
So join me in taking up our positions, standing firm, and we will see the deliverance the Lord will give us. We will not have to fight this battle. We will not be afraid. We will not be discouraged. We will go out and face whatever is attempting to take us out, and know the Lord will be with us. (Based on 2 Chron. 20:17) This is my declaration over us right now!
Declare the blessings of God over your life, many times throughout the day, and you will be overtaken by His untold abundance. Allow Him to take aim and target your life with His absolute, overwhelming goodness, and you will remain in the center of His peace!

My husband enjoys target practice and so to have time together, I will sometimes go as well. I’m not that good, but as you said, practice makes perfect! As far as the speaking and declaring: Go girl, go!

Handwritten on the inside of my Bible is: 7,487 promises made by God for humankind. I’m picturing God’s blessings and promises “chasing me down and overtaking me” – wow! In 2 Chronicles 20 the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “Listen” [pay attention, focus, stand still] then, gave God’s promise that they’d watch the LORD’s victory go before them. What struck me was this: immediately after standing still, focusing their attention, and remaining firm in believing and receiving God would hit the bullseye for them, King Jehoshaphat bowed low with his face to the ground, and all peoples of Judah and Jerusalem did the same, worshipping the LORD. Even before the morning march they held their breath and then began singing and praising saying, “Give thanks & praise to the LORD for He is good, His faithful love endures forever”. Amen! Inspiring post to keep our eyes on God the Ultimate Marksman.
