My BFFAE (Best Friend For All Eternity) said she was reading in Ecclesiastes, so I decided to join her. So you can thank her for what I’m posting today! (She’s such an amazing woman of God and I’m blessed to have her in my life!)
The traditional definition of one’s “lot in life” is a reference to one’s fortune of misfortune as determined by fate, chance, and luck. A “lot” was a token, often a marked stone, cast with others, like dice, to determine an outcome by sheer chance. (See 1 Chron. 24 for an example) The word “Lottery“ is derived from lot.
Your lot in life is simply the circumstances you live with, as directed by God.
“And it is good to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.” (Ecc. 5:19-20 [NLT])
As a person with at least 250 chickens at my ranch, I know what brooding is. A broody hen is a hen that wants her eggs to hatch. She will sit on top of her eggs (and others which she’s stolen) all day long in an attempt to hatch them.
We have several hens right now that it seems they are always in the nesting boxes, laying on top of a batch of eggs. If another chicken lays an egg, the broody hen, used her beak to drag it under herself, then fluffs her wings to snuggle in under herself. Even after I gather the eggs, she remains firmly in place, waiting for the next egg to grab.
How many times am I like that? Grabbing a hold of a problem, or someone else’s problem, and gather it to myself and not want to let go? More times than I can count I’m sure! But the words in the verse say, “they take no time to brood.”
It does not say have no time. Here I believe “have” would be a passively used word and “take” is an action word.
I want to be such a person that God keeps so busy enjoying life and I take no time to brood over mistakes in my past, or what someone did to me in the past, or whatever is negative in my past. I’m just going to focus on God and His goodness, and accept my lot in life. God knows what’s best for me, so I’m just going to trust Him to it!
Oh geez, look at the time! I’m going to take action and go gather the eggs now!

Such wisdom dear sister…wow! Thank you for sharing it with us. It fits well with something I said to a brother earlier today: “The thing about Christian in “Pilgrim’s Progress” as he followed God’s Path is this…he didn’t need a rear view mirror!”😁

I can imagine, after all some of the Lord’s best stories are agricultural stories that folk can relate to.

I love this, friend! It’s actually thematically similar to my next post different strategies I have used to ensure that my thoughts remain positive. And my post after that will be about our very first eggs from our hens!
250!! Wow! What a blessing your ranch sounds like!

What Alan said.🤗 To follow God, accepting His lot for my life, means no looking back (rear view mirror). But, like you said we “take” no time to look back—because it’s a waste of time. Now, I just need to take the time and I do this.😊 Preach on, sister! I love it.❤️

one’s lot in life is wrapped in action instinctively, worldly or Godly. “Your lot in life is simply the circumstances you live with, as directed by God” is an action to trust Jesus at all times, trust Jesus in all circumstance, and trust Jesus with all your heart. Take no time to brood, fret, mope, sulk, or hatch worry.
Encouraging post, thank you!!

Love your analogy about the broody chicken. No going back and trying to hold on to the past!

I have been brooding lately. At first, it was good as it allowed me to reflect, but the problem is I haven’t taken the next step. I like your way of seeing this… Maybe I just need a swift kick off the nest.

I guess I’m on another path, unless what I’m doing isn’t brooding. Which I don’t think I am as I’m not having negative thoughts or feeling bitter. Its just an autobiography. Odd, because I’m having this message from other sources about not talking about the past. Really not sure what team its coming from, as I’m trying to give my testimony and glorify Jesus doing it as well as just have some fun, sharing memories.

Life is too short to over think it, just keep being shiny for Jesus and share your testimony!

This was so good! I feel like I brood more often than I like to admit. I’m always taking on some sort of care which steals my joy and ruins my day. Thanks for the reminder that I need to enjoy the life God has given me.
