Hotter than Africa

Across a good deal of the United States we are experiencing record high temperatures. At my house we have an outdoor thermometer that has a digital readout inside. When I ask my husband how hot it is, he replies, “Hotter than Africa!”

So my brain made a connection when a friend of mine recently told me that when she first became a Christian, and she knew about places missionaries go, she was afraid God was going to call her to go to Africa.

But God knows best and places you right where He wants you to be.

Every time she goes on a hike, or walks her dog, she runs across someone who needs to hear about the love of Jesus. Her testimonies of these conversations are truly a work of God! I told her just this week, that every time she goes on a hike or walks her dog, she is going on a missionary trip.

Recently, I too have gone on a few missionary trips.

I took a trip to the second floor of my office building and encouraged a woman who was having a difficult morning. I pulled my car over by the man who was stopping traffic at the construction on the highway, and showed him the box of 2 day old baby chicks I had just picked up from the post office. (You should have seen his face, it was like a little kid on Christmas morning!) I also went on a really short trip, when I bought a young man’s lunch in the line behind me at the grocery store.

I don’t know about you, but these missionary trips bring me a great deal of joy. Seeing their faces, when the light of Jesus shines on them is priceless!

I have come to realize my determined purpose in this life is to bring heaven to earth. I will do this through prayer, and by sharing the gifts and resources God has blessed me with.

I’ve also realized that, in living eternity minded, and working with the idea that I should be focusing on what will last, I don’t need to waste time on things that are fleeting or just plain old garbage trying to distract me from my purpose.

If it’s none of my purpose, then it’s none of my business.

So please join me in changing your focus on what a missionary trip looks like and see how many of them you can squeeze into a day.

  1. What an encouraging and challenging post sister. I went on a mission trip at my supermarket recently where we have regular European immigrant beggars; I recognised the guy as a regular, always ready with a smile and warm greeting whether he gets anything or not. I usually buy him a pack lunch and tell him tgat God loves him. But on this specific day I felt the Spirit asking me to do more; so I bought him a gift card for the supermarket. I wasn’t ready for his reaction of jubilation, tears and telling me he had been worrying about food for the weekend. I don’t know his name or nationality yet, I aim to find these out soon.

  3. I love, LOVE this!❤️❤️❤️

For a follower of Jesus, a mission field can be anywhere with anyone. Whether it’s New Guinea, or the grocery store, God needs His salespeople everywhere. Sister, this stuff will preach!

  4. I confess that this can become a soapbox for me. So many times, I hear of churches taking grand trips to faraway lands to spread the Gospel (and it does need to be done!) when all they needed to do was step out their front door or go to the “other side” of town. “The harvest is plentiful…” and is not always located in the “sexy” places. Sometimes it’s in a little plot in your own backyard.

    I’m done soapboxing now.

  5. What a great reminder that we have a mission field right outside our front door. Always be ready to speak hope into the one who has lost all hope.
