The attorney tells the accused, “I have some good news and some bad news.” “What’s the bad news?” asks the accused. “The bad news is, your blood is all over the crime scene, and the DNA tests prove you did it.” “What’s the good news?” “Your cholesterol is 130.”
Some days are just flat out intense. And then there comes one defining moment in that day, where a smile comes on your face, and you relax. That happened to me on Wednesday.
I was very recently hired to help a new client out as an expert witness in his court case. As I normally do, I forwarded my resume to his attorney to share with the opposing side. Five days later I showed up in the court room. The counsel for the opposing side was trying to convince the judge that my being there was a last minute ruse, and 11th hour end around, and that I was just a hired gun with no credibility. He went so far as to start trash talking my credentials. I just sat there calmly, with my best poker face (that’s what we hired guns do best) and let him rant on.
When his was done with his little tirade, the judge spoke up and said, “I’ve know this witness for over 40 years.”
Crickets.
That was the defining moment for me, my client, and his attorney. The judge let him know he knew me and my character, and his rant was all for naught.
When I spoke later with my client’s attorney, she said it was all she could do to keep a straight face, and later told everyone in her office about the judge’s comment and they all has a good laugh.
So my Bible memorization verse for this week was even more precious.
“Because the LORD God helps me, I will not be dismayed; therefore I have set my face like flint to do His will, and I know that I will triumph.” (Isa. 50:7 [TLB])
I pick these verses on Sunday. Who knew it would be so timely?
God.
When you choose to live your life with integrity and follow His good will for your life, others see it.
Flint is a stone that is incredibly durable. It was used to make stone tools, and also when struck, was used to create a spark and start fires.
Having defended our water rights at our ranch on three separate occasions, I learned so much about court procedure, and how to properly present my evidence, which I don’t think the opposing attorney will see coming, based on his previous opinion of me. That’s when the sparks will fly.
I also reminded myself that I am doing this to help my client and to bring glory to God alone. So I am also praying for opposing counsel, that this might be an opportunity for them to see the light of Jesus shine through me, and want a personal relationship with Him too.
Then it can be a real win win situation! So that they do not see the sparks of hell flying for all eternity.
Now I have to update my resume to include the job title of “hired gun.” I really like the sound of that!

I love how He gently reminds me He gave me these gifts, and it’s not about me, but Him!

You’re no “hired gun.” You’re a “faithful witness.” Praise the LORD!

Yours is the first post I’ve read today that sent me after my colored gel pen to write a scripture verse in my pocket journal. Isaiah 50:7 is the perfect “poker face” passage! Notice the alliteration in the previous sentence.🤗 Anyway, I wrote this verse down in red, because they could be the words of Christ Himself. He stayed with his mission–rock solid–to the victorious end. And now He is sitting at the right hand of God! Now, I’ve been told (by a number cruncher) that red is not a color accountants want to see. But it’s a great color to remember for a Christian, saved by God’s grace through the blood of Christ. Great post, sister! God Bless.

This is an awesome comment brother! I did notice the alliteration (507 bonus points for Isaiah 50:7) And normally you’re correct, accountant’s do like like to see red, but this accountant loves it for the very reason you mentioned! God bless you! I too have a little pocket journal that I write such verses that stick out to me. So handy to refer to when I need a boost!

Ooops, I meant to say DO NOT like to see red

Understood. Red means your client has a little (or big) problem.

Indeed, and I’m using my red pen a bunch to make notes on what the previous accountant did not do correctly.

What a beautiful God ordained opportunity sister; I pray that He will guide you in your evidence, that those listening will see and hear God in your voice.
If I ever need a “hired gun”… I know who to ask now!🤣

I know the Holy Spirit is and will continue to guide me in this case. I’d be happy to come to Scotland if you ever need it!

I enjoyed reading this story post! I love the part where you referred to yourself as a hired gun! 🙂
The scripture was also so “timely” for me today, especially! Thank you! 💜

This is the part where we hired guns blow the smoke off the end of the barrel of the gun, and walk off into the sunset!
