Enough already!

Sometimes it is just habit, but then I’m aware of what just came out of my mouth, and I have to think, “Enough already!”

For the last two weeks I’ve really been paying attention to the words I’m speaking out loud. And frankly, I’m ashamed of myself. But God, in His infinite kindness to me, has shown me there is a better way to live.

Today, God has given me a choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. All heaven and earth will witness my choice. So I choose to speak life and blessings, because He is the key to my life. (See Deut.30:19-20)

I will let the Spirit renew my thoughts and attitudes. I will daily put on my new nature, where I am created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. (See Eph 4:23-24)

I will let God transform me into a new person by changing the way I think: a fresh newness in all I do and think. Then I will learn from my own experience that God’s will is all that truly satisfies me. (See Rom 12:2)

I will not speak harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what I say will do good to those who hear me. (See Eph 4:29)

I had (see how I did that in the past tense?) a bad habit of focusing on the negative. God made it hit home that negative thoughts do not bring positive results. I had to choose what I was focusing on. I just finished reading two books that also helped realign my focus. They both mentioned that the devil wants nothing more than us to be focused on him and his evil lies.

Some Christians take that too far, to study satan’s ways so they can identify when something coming at them appears to be from him. Frankly, I have determined not to focus on satan. He would like nothing more that our complete focus to be on him. He is already defeated. I choose to focus on the One who overcame him instead.

I read that people who are trained in anit-counterfeiting work never see what counterfeit money looks like. Instead they so thoroughly study what a genuine bill looks like, that anything that does not measure up to it, is therefore a fake.

If you study the real thing, anything that does not measure up to it is false. That’s why it is so important to stay in the Word of God. To memorize and meditate on what it says. And then to speak it out loud.

God spoke and things were created. When the devil tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus countered him with, “No, for the Scriptures say…” He didn’t discuss it with satan, He just spoke out loud what His Father said.

If I’m to be more like Jesus every day, then I had better do what He did. Now if someone does something that I consider stupid, instead of grumbling or saying something out loud that is unkind, I now say, “Bless them God.” Or speak my memory verse for the week out loud. If I’m tempted to say “Go to hell you jerk!” I now say “Go to heaven, you beloved person who was also created in the image of God!” Who I am to judge and condemn someone to hell? Frankly that is way above my pay grade!

I have been more joyful and peaceful since I’ve been speaking life instead of death. It is literally transforming me and my attitude. I’m looking for the positive more now and flushing the negative as soon as it crosses my brain. Focusing on the real deal (God) is so much better than looking at the negative and the counterfeit (satan).

Something so simple, yet so profound. Since all heaven and earth are witnessing my choice, join me in speaking life and blessings, and let’s see the world change in our own sphere of influence, and beyond!

  1. “negative thoughts do not bring positive results.” Amen, sister! We wrote on similar themes this week.

It’s just as easy to speak life as it is not to—at least in theory. Negative thoughts and actions are so powerful and harmful, but it is possible to flood them out with their positive cousins. Let’s do this!!

  2. What a profound and wise post sister! I think you hit it on the head with these words :
“If you study the real thing, anything that does not measure up to it is false. That’s why it is so important to stay in the Word of God.”

  3. This is SO good Cindi!!!! I have saved this to read over and over again! I tell myself I’m not being negative but realistic. What you said is SO true “negative thoughts do not bring positive results.” How true that is and now that you’ve stated it this way, I won’t forget it and I’ll hear your voice!!! Love and blessings you are such a gift!!!

    1. Well then it is God to thank for that phrase! I agree about the negative vs. realistic. I mean even if it is real, I don’t need to speak negative words over the situation making it worse. And I love you too and am grateful to have you in my life!
