Sarcastic

I’m pretty sure we all have one. You know, that family member who at family gatherings always gets under your skin by saying something. They seem determined to make every holiday gathering a platform for them to tell everyone else what they are doing wrong, and then offer their opinion on how you can make it better. They don’t care who they pick on or how their words hurt.

They use their mouth as a weapon.

The ones that are really tricky are those who cover it by offering a kiss first, and then lay into you.

So when I saw a nature show featuring the sarcastic fringehead fish, I lost it!

They are a small but very hardy saltwater fish that has a large mouth and aggressive territorial behavior.

The ‘sarcastic’ in their name is thought to derive from from the Greek word sarkázein, which means ‘to tear flesh’ – referring to their aggressive behavior.

The fringehead part comes from them flaring open their mouths as wide as they can. They fight each other with what looks like a kiss. Riled individuals face-off by slamming their huge, open mouths together in a strange ‘who has the biggest mouth competition.’ They literally use their mouth as a weapon.

Please join me this holiday season not to be a sarcastic fringehead fish. Don’t open your mouth and fight back. Don’t let anything steal your peace. Be determined not to sin in what you say. (Ps. 17:3)

Just smile and walk away. You’ll be better for it.

  1. Oh Wow! 😯
What an excellent post and illustration from nature!
I must confess I used my mouth and vocabulary as a lethal weapon when I was younger, very often beginning fights. But praise God He did a work in me and through time that old Alan has been evicted. Now rather than taking delight in causing pain I look for opportunities to brighten and bless people, even in little ways…it is so satisfying. Thank you for sharing this post, God bless you today sister 🙏
