Exponential

A friend and fellow blogger invited me to do something different for Lent this year. Every day we are reading John 17, and digging deeper to find new insights into the prayer of Jesus right before he was arrested.

Verse 20 really stuck out to me.

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.” (NLT)

Here’s where the fun math comes in.

Exponential growth is a process that increases quantity over time at an ever-increasing rate.

Those eleven disciples started spreading the Good News. Now in 2023, the estimate of people who are Christians in the world is 2,604,381,000. The people who did this study also estimated that from 2022 to 2023 the people who became Christians increased by 44,506,000. (That’s million)

Wow from 11 to 2,604,381,000. That’s billions. That is exponential growth.

And just for fun because it looks cool, I’ve included the formula I found. Not that I’m asking you do do the math, it just looked cool.

The formula is f (x) = a (1 + r) x, where a is the initial value, r is the rate of growth, and x is the time.

I want to do my part every day to further the Kingdom of God in it’s exponential growth, by living out my testimony to the world around me. I want to f (x) = a (1 + r) x for Jesus!

  1. That’s a fascinating way to connect the exponential growth of Christianity to the power of Jesus’ prayer in John 17:20. It’s inspiring to think about how the message of the disciples has spread to billions over time.
