Sometimes you just need to let God’s timing work in your life. I have been working on a post involving lament, and wanted to post it today, but the timing is not just right. So I will continue fine tuning it for a later date.
So today, we are going to have more fun with math! (I hear you all cheering out there!) I’m going to share about what an integer is. It comes from a Latin word meaning “whole”, or literally, “untouched.”
An integer is a whole number. It is a number that does not contain a fraction or decimal.
So my brain went to work when reading Psalm 15. Defined, integrity (derived from integer) is the quality or condition of being whole or undivided; completeness.
“Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord?
Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?
Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,
speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
Those who refuse to gossip
or harm their neighbors
or speak evil of their friends.
Those who despise flagrant sinners,
and honor the faithful followers of the Lord,
and keep their promises even when it hurts.
Those who lend money without charging interest,
and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent.
Such people will stand firm forever.” [NLT]
I strive to be like that. Put my turn signal on even when I am the only person on the road. Then it becomes habit, so I automatically do it at all times. Just like putting on my seat belt. Bringing my shopping cart to the little collection corral instead of leaving it in the middle of the parking lot. Or any number of things. Then when I do things that are pleasing to God even when no one is watching, it becomes habit, so when confronted with a difficult decision, I will do the right thing.
I have had instances in my business that reflect this too. Once, years ago, I made a mistake on a person’s tax return and he received a letter from the IRS stating he now owed $1100. He brought it to me with a little bit of indignation, fully expecting a battle. I took the letter, and while he was sitting there, looked up his return and saw my mistake, and told him not to worry. I took out my checkbook and wrote a check to the IRS for the amount he owed and put it in the envelope with the payment voucher. He was gobsmacked. He said he never anticipated that response, and because of it, I now had a client for life.
It was keeping my promise even when it hurt. $1100 was and is a lot of money, but it was the right thing to do. And it made us both whole.
Another thing I recently read about whole, is from Ray C. Stedman. He said when you are reading your Bible, whenever you come across the word holy, substitute it with the word wholly. Because God is wholly holy. And because of what Jesus did for us, we are now wholly holy too. This has taken my reading the Word a bit deeper.
See, once again, math is fun!

I must admit, my heart sank when you mentioned maths…but it was a painless and fruitful lesson Cindi – thank you 😊
We recently took possession of a newer car with “Lane assist” monitoring which bleeps when you cross a lane in traffic, or just don’t use an indicator. I have grown to like it and refuse to switch off the function because it keeps me driving with more integrity on this one issue.
God bless you today sister 🙏

You had me when you mentioned math. As a degreed engineer, I love math. And I love the etymology of words, integer and integrity coming from the same root. Your story about the IRS return is heartwarming. My tax consultant told me a few years ago that unless my incomes change drastically, I can figure it out on my own, since I am retired. I think that was honorable too. And may you continue to experience God’s wholly holiness.

It seems to me, Cindi, that the notion of ‘integrity’ – complete consistent – just one person, not two faced, is so important for anybody… and especially any of us who say that we are Christians.

The old Norwegian went forward at the altar call and gave his life to Jesus. He got up from his knees and turned around to face the congregation. With tears in his eyes and a big grin on his face he announced, “Ole wholly holy!”
Sorry…. 😉

I like the relationship between integrity and integer. I’d never put that together before. Or if I did, I’d forgotten. 😊

That great man and preacher, Billy Graham, once said, “Integrity means that if our private life was suddenly exposed, we’d have no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed.” I suppose we all have some embarrassing parts of our lives, but your thoughts on integrity serve as an excellent guide.
