Work In Progress

Okay boys and girls, today’s accounting lesson is WIP, or Work In Progress.

Work-In-Progress (WIP) is an accounting entry on a company’s balance sheet referring to the money spent on materials, processes, and labor to manufacture a product.

It is calculated as a sum of the following three elements used to fashion a product or service: cost of materials used in the production process, labor expenses for the product as it moves through partial completion stages, and overhead costs incurred in making the final product.

The work in progress accounting is a method of accounting tailored specifically to construction that tracks costs and revenues throughout the life-cycle of construction projects. Rather than waiting for project completion, WIP accounting involves recording the direct labor, materials, subcontracting costs and allocated overhead associated with construction work as it is performed.

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” (Phil 1:6 [NLT])

Once again, God’s math is awesome! God daily molds us to be more like His Son. We are all works in progress. Because of this, we have the hope that today we will not be the same person we were yesterday. As we walk with Him, He will continue to make us into who we were always meant to be.

God is building eternal value in our lives.

So we may not like who we are today, and that’s okay. Because God is at work in us, transforming us and preparing us for a life we are going to love. And not just for eternity. We can live that life right now, today.

So let’s give Him thanks that during our partial stages of completion, He never gives up on us, and will continue until the work is completed.

  1. I love the division of costs to labour, materials and overheads… I’d like to continue the analogy and work out how the God who still sees us as a work in progress is working on our labour, materials and overheads…. And whether he’s still on budget.

  2. It is with great relief and jubilation that I often raise my hands in defence: “God isn’t finished with me yet!” This is not weakness but strength in surrendering all to Him – He is our fortress. God bless you today sister 🙏

  3. Thank you for the accounting lesson. I have worked on many such projects. But I like what Ruth Graham had placed on her tombstone. It was actually a road sing she had read after her husband, Billy Graham, had been rather impatient. The sign read “End of Construction. Thank you for your patience.” God must have a lot of patience with me.

  4. I realize more everyday that I am a work in progress…and I’m constantly hit with the lie that “What I am today is who I’ll be tomorrow”. I heard a man of God say “You are who you are becoming”…meaning what we do today will shape us for better or for worse, but God wants to mold us for a specific purpose so submitting to Him makes the process easier and less painful.

Great devotional, thanks for sharing it! Much needed!!👍🏻🙏
