Waste not

One of my first visits to my husband’s grandparent’s house, was an eye-opener for me. I was helping her make dinner, and we down into the basement to get something for our preparations. They had shelves lining all the walls, fully stocked with supplies. Canned goods, paper towels, toilet paper, you name it, they had it. I stood there in awe as she explained.

She and grandpa grew up during the Depression. They went without and had to stretch everything they could. Nothing went to waste. That mentality carried over even now, during times of plenty. It made an impression on me.

Now I’m not one of those who has enough food stored away for each person for a year, or pouches of ready to eat meals in my bunker, (no, I do not have a bunker!) but I do like to be prepared.

About twice a year I drive over to the Super Walmart, 35 miles away to stock up on things. For some reason, last year the store had a bunch of empty shelves, and I came home empty handed on many items I’d normally find.

So my husband went online to Amazon and ordered it there. My delivery man at the post office just loved it! Delivering heavy boxes of canned goods, noodles etc. And just this past Friday I had one of the teller’s at the bank ask me, “So you can really order noodles online?” Apparently the same postman told him about my deliveries. Now whenever something gets delivered to my office, the postman says, “looks like your husband is at it again.”

I do not like to be wasteful either. One example is a tube of toothpaste. I have a little gizmo you put on the end of the tube and you crank it to squeeze the toothpaste down. It flattens the tube as it goes. Then I realized that even then, there is still a good bit of toothpaste left at the top. I pinch that down to get it out, and then can take a pair of pliers to squeeze out the last bit.

Which got me to thinking, can I live my life for Jesus that way too? Squeezing out every precious drop for Him? I mean when I think about it, that is just what He did for me, and for you. He became a human, and every last drop of His life and blood were squeezed out so that He could restore us to God’s original plan of fellowship with us, now and for all eternity.

Jesus is the prime example of waste not. And I am forever grateful.

So fully stock your shelves with God’s Word and His Goodness and share out of your abundance with others. Don’t waste a precious minute or opportunity!

  1. I love this post about storing groceries etc 😋 We often bought in bulk from big supermarkets or even Cosco when the kids were young. Now with the family grown up and mostly moved on we buy a lot less. But you are right that we need to stock up on God’s Word in our walk with Him – you can ever have too much of it. God bless you today sister 🙏

  2. When my grandmother died, we had to throw out hundreds of jars of canned vegetables. She never dated anything, and a lot had dust all over the jars. But I will buy some food item for a couple of dollars and then adjust the menu to use it completely before it spoils. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. My parents were born in the 1930’s. Growing up we lived well but frugally. After they retired they traveled quite a bit. When I visited them I *knew* what I’d find in the bathroom soap dish – small bars of soap from their hotel stays. I’d have been disappointed otherwise. 😊
