…Got the t-shirt

I’m reading a book called Extravagant Grace. It has six different authors. One of them is Barbara Johnson. (1927-2007)

One of her sections included something that grabbed me.

“In your darkest hours, listen to Jesus saying, ‘Been there. Done that.’ Jesus has tasted what you are tasting, felt what you are feeling, looked into the blackest pit, knows the clutch of fear in the night, and the pain of sharp rocks under bare feet while dragging up a mountainside nobody walked before. This is God’s gift of grace in your darkness and difficult struggles. He triumphed over the worst, and will help you do the same. He knows everything you’re going through, and has already made arrangements for it.”

“Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.” (Heb. 4:15 [MSG])

How comforting to realize that Jesus has indeed been there and done that for us.

I wonder if He got the t-shirt too!

  1. Another good book on grace is by Philip Yancey–What’s So Amazing About Grace?

Sometimes I will look to Heaven and start to say, “You just don’t understand how hard this can be.” Then I catch myself, shake my head, and laugh. Yeah. He knows.
