Languages

Have you ever been in a room where it seemed like everyone was talking at once? It’s kind of chaotic and makes it hard to focus and think.

Which makes me appreciate God all the more! He hears every single one of us at the same time. He listens when we pray and communicate with Him.

It is estimated that there are 7159 different languages in the world today. And God understands them all. That too makes me appreciate Him all the more!

I took Spanish in high school, and minored in it in college. I went on a trip through the college, in the summer, where we spent a month in Mexico, immersed in the language and culture. It really helped my speaking the language. Spanish speaking people appreciated the fact that I was giving it my best effort, even if I did not get the tenses or words correct. I learned how to say a word by using other words to describe it. For example, one beautiful church, I said it was a building full of age. My local companions thought that was delightful.

After the month was over, and returning to the United States, I had a moment of shock when at the airport I could understand all the people speaking English! I did not have to stop and process what they were saying, I could just hear.

I am relatively fluent in Spanish, and use it with my Hispanic clients.

Thursday night I woke up and realized I was praying in Spanish! That has never happened before! It was so cool I could not stop and go back to sleep! Then I realized God understands me no matter what language I am speaking. So now I am praying in both English and Spanish. It is making me more mindful of what I’m saying, when I have to slow down to get the right word, or look it up in the Spanish dictionary.

I am so blessed that God is taking me on this new journey in prayer.

Gracias a Dios!

  1. Wow! I am in awe of anyone who can speak another language like you Cindi. But it is utterly awesome that you can pray naturally in Spanish. I had never thought of our God’s multilingual skills before…that is seriously mind-boggling indeed! Thank you for sharing this encouraging message today. God bless you richly in His presence πŸ™

  2. As I read this I realized that prayer itself is a type of language. Like Paul said, the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings to deep for words. I want to become more fluent in the language of prayer! Great post. Bueno!

  3. My great strides in middle school Spanish, conversant with poor vocabulary, were undone by my two years of high school Spanish. Odd how you can unlearn something while making A’s and B’s. But in teaching around the world, I found it important to learn key technical words and counting to ten in each country. It kept the interpreter honest. Not enough to have a conversation, but enough to be polite on one hand, and get their attention on the other hand. My wife was born in Indonesia, lived in the Netherlands before moving to El Paso, TX. When she was talking to someone from another country, she thought in that language. I might ask her a question, and she would apologize to her friend on my behalf, blink a few times to get her brain back to English, and then ask me to repeat the question. I am sure she prayed in other languages.
