K.I.S.S.

Or, Keep It Simple Sweetie

I have been deeply moved by prayers and poems posted by Tim McGee, Reflections from the Pew. His posts are beautiful, elegant, and to the point.

We need more of that in the world today. There is way too much meaningless fluff and bluster. We should be treating others with respect, not hateful, hurtful words.

There are also those in the world who puff themselves up by using big words, when simple ones will do. If you keep using big words, folks will eventually get bored and quit listening. I simply do not have enough time in a day to keep looking up those words in the dictionary, to try to figure out what they are trying to say.

I love numbers. So the poetry I like to write is haiku and sonnets. Because you have to keep it to an exact number of syllables per line. A haiku is five, seven, five. A sonnet is fourteen lines with ten syllables each. It really engages my brain to find simple words that will fit in each line. Also, if you see in the line at the store, or walking down the street counting on my fingers, you now know why!

So here is a haiku I made for this post:

Poetry is hard.

But with Jesus as your muse,

Hope infused words flow.

“We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!” (Eph. 2:10 [TPT])

I also like to pray the Scriptures making it an affirming conversation between myself and Jesus. This is one I’ve been praying lately, based on Psalm 112 [TLB].

I praise you Lord!

When I have profound reverence for You, and worship You with awe, I will be blessed beyond expression.

I will not be overthrown by evil circumstances. Your constant care of me will make a deep impression on all who see it.

I do not fear bad news, nor do I live in dread of what may happen. Because I am settled in my mind that You will take care of me. That is why I am not afraid, but can calmly face my foes.

So this post is K.I.S.S.ing you in the love of Jesus!

Giggle more, frown less.

Life’s too short to be distressed.

Jesus’ rest is best!

p.s. One last haiku

So thanks to you Tim,

I will write haiku again.

You rock, my brother!

  1. I write at the reading level of a newspaper (5th grade), I have no need to prove my degrees (they already know). And too…, whatever the setting, whatever the words one says – unless they relate to the listener, they are a waste. I refer to it as “projected empathy,” by putting myself in their place and in knowing them… how can I write and speak so that it will make sense to them, putting something has to be on the table for each according to their spiritual development… and trust them enough to leave them thinking. Extra work, but it pays off. 🙂
