Minutes

I am here to tell you time is relative. Defined, a minute is a short space of time.(MW) But there are different ways of counting the exact same minute. There is a New York minute. Which goes really, really fast. Then there is a football minute. That same minute can drag out to five minutes, if not longer. The clock stops for a time out, an injury, or a chance to review a play, just to name a few. The two minute warning can stretch on and on. Add in some commercials and that one minute now equals fifteen minutes!

The way God views time is very different that the way we view it. God is eternal. He sees all of time at the same time. God is omnipresent. He is present in all places at all times We can only see our present moment.

Our lives pass in a New York minute. “Show me, O LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath.” (Ps. 38:4-5 [NIV])

Life is too short to waste it. We need to be wise and make our minutes count. We need to invest our time. Make the most of it. Not spending our minutes on stupid stuff. Count, invest, and spend insightfully because we only have a limited number of minutes in our bank.

But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hands.” (Ps. 31:14-15 [NIV])

We can make plans, but the final outcome is in God’s hands.” (Prov. 16:1 [TLB])

Commit your work to the Lord, then it will succeed.” (Prov. 16:3 [TLB])

We should make plans—counting on God to direct us.” (Prov. 16:9 [TLB])

In James 4:13-14 we are warned not to take pride in our planning, since our life is brief and in under God’s control.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Eph. 5:15-17 [NIV])

Reverence for God adds length to each day, so how can the wicked expect a long, good life?” (Prov. 10:27 [TLB])

How cool is that? When we revere God, He adds football minutes to each of our days!

We need to be the light to others when it comes to time and how to use it wisely. Which leads me to my last example. The speed of light travels at 186,282 miles per second. So in one “light minute” you are traveling 11,176,920 miles directly into someone’s heart. So make your light life count!

One last thought, time is unrefundable. So use your God given New York minutes and football minutes wisely. Do so every single day He gives you the opportunity to draw breath, and the ability to do His will at light speed!

  1. One step further, perhaps … time is a random measurement that has been accepted as the norm. We let the accepted norm rule our day and, in many cases, our hearts. I am as impatient as they come but my goodness there is far too much attention focused on time, even for my liking. God’s timing is, of course, always perfect. Thanks for your wisdom.

  2. Amen! This is something that’s been on my heart lately. Not wanting to waste anytime. Living and loving on purpose and obeying Him. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
