As a food producer in Colorado, I have to carry a letter with me at all times. It is a critical business designation which states that “the bearer of this letter is an essential worker in the food and agricultural sector and in exempt from any restrictions placed on work or travel during the COVID-19 emergency.”
I still wear an mask and gloves when dealing with the public for the safety of all of us. By doing so I want to send the message that I care enough about their health to do the right thing. I also DO NOT want to arrive in heaven and have Jesus tell me that I was responsible for someone’s death, because I was a carrier but did not show signs of the virus. That would suck!
As human beings, there are five basic things we need to survive: air, food, water, clothing, and shelter. As a rancher, I am essential in providing one of these needs, food. It is my job to share this resource with people. Which got me to thinking, we all have essential worker status during this crisis. It is our job to share these five basic needs, spiritually, with those we talk to every day. But we are not the producer of these needs, God is.
Air— “The LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being.” (Gen. 2:7 [NIV])
Food—“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” (John 6:27 [NIV])
“Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who come to me will never go hungry and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35 [NIV])
Water—“Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God and who asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10 [NIV])
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (John 7:38 [NIV])
Clothing—“Rather, cloth yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Rom. 13:14 [NIV])
Shelter—“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High God will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Ps. 91:1 [NIV])
So He is the Producer and calls us to be the essential workers. “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. As the lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. (Matt. 9:37-38 [NIV])
“What oxygen is for the lungs, such is hope for the meaning of human life.” Emil Brunner
In these difficult days, folks need us essential workers to bring them hope, and let them know that God is the Provider of the basic needs for their souls. So please join me!
p.s. I also know that God is a rancher like me. It says so in the Bible. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills! (See Ps. 50:10)
