One smooth stone

They don’t call it the Rocky Mountains for nothing! We have cleared big 8 foot wide backhoe buckets of rocks out of pastures, roads etc. at the ranch. Whenever I talk a hike around the property, I run across more, or all various shapes and sizes.

While walking around the property, I am mindful and keeping my eyes on the path before me. Too many times before I’d be enjoying the beautiful scenery, and trip on a piece of sage brush or a rock. As I don’t like getting hurt for being careless, I now come to a full and complete stop if I want to enjoy what is before me.

On a recent excursion last week, I stopped to look at a section of fence, and while doing so, saw what looked like a almost perfect circle rock. It was also very smooth. I picked it up and looked it over. It was a dark black with little flakes of white.

Timing is everything. Today is Collect Rocks Day in the United States. September 16th is when folks are already getting their tools ready to start digging and collecting. This day allows everyone to have a nice day out but also learn more about the planet we inhabit and how it’s formed. (How nice to have that line up with what I’m posting today!)

I also read in the Bible this week in 1 Samuel 17:40 where David picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he ran across the valley to fight Goliath, the Philistine. In verse 49, he reached into his bag, took out one of the smooth stones, hurled it with his sling and hit Goliath in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.

I don’t know how big David’s smooth stone was, but the one I found fit nicely in the palm of my hand. When I think that one smooth stone like the one I found, could kill a giant, when used by a believing person who knows that the battle is the LORD’s, that just made me appreciate what David was able to do all the more.

He was indignant that the giant was taunting God. David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (vs.45)

With that kind of faith, we are able to be that one smooth stone used in the Hands of a Living God to accomplish His purposes to further His Kingdom.

So go and be that one smooth stone today! Don’t worry that you are only one stone, one smooth stone can accomplish great things!

  1. “I now come to a full and complete stop if I want to enjoy what is before me.”

You’ve got me picturing a teenaged David stopping, and stooping to find each of those five smooth stones in the river bed.

Amen, sister. Today’s bonus points are a smooth (well-rounded) number, but they are mega-points: 512.

  2. It was good of “them” to synchronize their rock day efforts with yours!
This post puts a different spin on the slur “dumber than a box of rocks”, or, “he/she must have rocks in his/her head”. Perhaps God is equipping them for a physical battle against evil!!! I think i like that summation better and wouldn’t mind having a few rocks of my own. I do however, have my Rock and Redeemer who has planted gemstones of Scripture in my heart and mind to sling at mockers and the persecutors that are so prevalent in our society today. Thank You Jesus for preparing me for battle against my Faith by giving me stones to throw!!

  3. “… when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” You got me to thinking about that. Do not worry; when you need a smooth stone, God will provide it.
