Funeral Etiquette

You are invited to join me in celebration of life. Proper funeral etiquette will not be followed. There will be no wearing of black mourning clothes, nor black arm bands showing respect for the deceased. No weeping nor wailing will be allowed either. No going up and viewing the deceased in the casket. Kind words in the eulogy will not be spoken.

Why?

For the deceased is my old do-it-yourself sin life.

“So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go! This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life.” (Rom 8:12-15a [MSG])

I’m giving it a decent burial. And by decent, I mean I am digging a very deep hole and putting it in the ground, where it cannot come back and tempt me to take charge again. That’s God’s job, not mine.

I have a new life, thanks to Jesus. God is giving me things to do and therefore, places to go. I’m going to live my new resurrection life to the fullest, not standing at the grave site, mourning and tending the ground, or putting out fresh flowers.

No sir. Not gonna happen. I am celebrating life. God is beckoning.

  1. Yup! There is to be no mourning over our old life, we are new creations in Christ – hallelujah 🙌 ♥️
In fact Isaiah says this in 38:17b :
“For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.” God has thrown our old self over His back, so both us and Him need not look at it again! That is got to be worth another hallelujah…or two! 😁

  2. As for wearing black at a funeral, at my wife’s memorial service there was one relative and his family who I told my son “If they show up, they will make a scene.” They were the only ones there in black. Everyone else was celebrating my wife’s life and the fact that she was no longer in pain.
