Vast

One day it just struck me and I was on a mission. I live in a city designated as a Tree City. We have loads of trees lining the streets. We have a lot of trees on on ranch too. And right now the leaves are full and green.

I had an urge to see how many leaves were on a single tree. So I got out my ladder, leaned it up against a tree and starting counting. (You know how I love math!) I’d get so far, then a breeze would come up, the branch would move and I’d lose my place, and had to start all over. It was an exercise in futility.

Now before you think I’ve gone completely bonkers, I did not actually do that. But I was pondering as I looked over all the trees, that God knows exactly how many leaves are on each tree. On every single tree all over the world! Then my gaze broadened to include blades of grass, leaves on the sage brush, the needles on a pine tree, feathers on a bird, etc. etc. And then as I thought as a leaf falls off the tree, He subtracts it from the total, keeping a running tally in His head.

He also knows the number of hairs on my head, and on your heads. (Luke 12:7) As of today, the population clock shows the total number of people in the world is 8.2 billion. That a lot of hairs to keep track of too!

My finite mind could not grasp the immensity of those numbers. God’s math is infinite. Yet, He cares so much for us, and wanted to restore our relationship with Him, that Jesus came to earth to restore us to Him.

The sheer vastness of that love is beyond what my finite mind can grasp. God ‘s love goes to infinity and beyond! His loves goes from the here and now to all eternity! β€œHis steadfast love endures forever.” (Ps 118, repeatedly.)

“Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens…” (Ps. 36-5 [NLT])

Now I get such hope when looking at leaves, blades of grass, in fact all of creation, knowing that God is in control, taking care of the math, and me, now and for eternity.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go put my ladder away, and leave all that really counts up to Him.

  1. Wow! 😯
Trying to count leaves on a tree definitely is not for the lighthearted. I am both relieved and happy to know that I don’t need to count leaves…our Father God has it all in hand. That was a close call with maths 😳
God bless you today sister πŸ™

  2. Well done. Knowing your love for numbers and preciseness, I figured you were seriously going to estimate the number of leaves on that tree. I imagined you had a mathematical formula that gave an approximate leaf count, based on the number of leaves on one branch.
Nevertheless, the spiritual application is excellent. We can no more measure the vastness of God’s love than we can count every leaf on a blowing tree, or inventory all the grains of sand on a beach!

  3. So thought provoking. If this post doesn’t make people worship God, they are lost causes. Thank you God for every leaf, blade of grass, every cell in our bodies. We stand in awe.

  4. St. Julian of Norwich writes of a vision that God showed her:

And in this [God] showed me a little thing, the quantity of a hazel nut, lying in the palm of my hand, as it seemed. And it was as round as any ball. I looked upon it with the eye of my understanding, and thought, ‘What may this be?’ And it was answered generally thus, ‘It is all that is made.’ I marveled how it might last, for I thought it might suddenly have fallen to nothing for littleness. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasts and ever shall, for God loves it. And so have all things their beginning by the love of God.Β

In this little thing I saw three properties. The first is that God made it. The second that God loves it. And the third, that God keeps it. But what is this to me? Truly, the Creator, the Keeper, the Lover. For until I am substantially β€œoned” to him, I may never have full rest nor true bliss. That is to say, until I be so fastened to him that there is nothing that is made between my God and me.
