Back to basics

I’ve had something rolling around in my soul this last week. How do I love God? Seems like a tall order to me. But in reality it is quite simple. We humans just like to complicate things.

We need to get back to basics.

God created us to love Him. He instilled that need to love in us, it is there we just need to tap into it. How? By shifting our complete focus onto Him.

God is the ultimate and final source of my strength, healing, and comfort. He wants me to be utterly and completely dependent upon Him, not upon any other person or thing. (Based on 1 Chron. 29:12)

He longs for us to make Him the most important thing/being in our life. I don’t want to make Him sad or hurt His heart. I can make my daily life an act of worship. With everything I say and do, or not do, I can let Him know I am doing it out of love for Him.

Not getting angry at the person who just cut me off in their car. Doing the chore I know my husband does not like to do, without grumbling, but gratefully. Quit taking offense at things that really don’t matter. Add your own examples here.

I have found not only is my day more peaceful and full of joy, I am actively looking for ways to make God happy. Why wouldn’t I? For all He has done for me, I am grateful and want to express that gratitude through my daily actions. I find myself thinking about my actions before I just do what I’ve always done before. I believe it is a holy pause, granted by the Holy Spirit, so that I can do what is pleasing to God.

Getting back to the most important command.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deut. 6:5 [NIV])

“But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Joshua 22:5 [NIV])

“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’” (Matt. 22:37 [NIV])

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30 [NIV])

From these I felt God telling me, “Love ME, your God, with your whole heart. Love ME with all that’s in you, with everything you’ve got. With all you passion, prayer, intelligence, and energy. Delight in ME today. Follow ME today.”

I want to make each day all about Him!

Then yesterday, a friend and fellow blogger in Minnesota, sent me what he had stirring in his soul first thing in the morning. His final line summed it up beautifully.

“It is not about discovering new instruction. Rather, it is about faithfulness to what we’ve already received.”

So we need to quit looking for new answers and do as my friend also wrote, “Jesus brings us back full circle in John 14:15—“If you love me, keep my commandments.”

I gave you 4 times where the Bible commanded us to love the Lord our God. Now it is up to us to do so. If you are unsure as to how, ask Him, like I did. He is always happy to help us and show us. (James 1:5)

It really is just that basic.

    Reminds me of: 😊

  2. Excellent 🥰 Here’s another example. I’m purging and I laid on my mom’s Vintage Slant Board. Upon trying to get up, I wrenched my back so bad that I could barely get to the couch, 2 feet away. After resting, it is still very cramped. My thoughts were “I guess you want me to go through my old bible studies while resting in the recliner, instead of going through the closet, Jesus.” It’s so wonderful to have a constant relationship with our best friend. HE talks to us all the time, if we just listen.

      1. It’s Marla. 🙂 I’m assuming you knew that and silly autocorrect didn’t. 😆 I’m surprised someone else had a reaction like mine. I know you are physically fit, being on the farm, so you confirmed I need to donate it.

It’s a bit hard to let go bc it’s about 70 years old, was my moms, and is in great condition. And I keep thinking it may be really good for posture, stretching all the back muscles and all the organs. But if 2 of us had an adverse reaction, that’s God speaking!
