Here at the ranch we needed a way to extend the light our chickens had during the day in the winter. So my husband got some solar lights and mounted them in the area where the chickens go for the night.
At 5:30 am I turn the on, and go out around 8 pm to shut them off. It has really helped with keeping egg production up. Well, sort of. There is still a season where our approx. 385 chickens decide that they would rather produce more feathers to stay warm than give us an egg. Some days we’re lucky if we get one dozen eggs total!
So walking out in the dark, in the cold, when the ground is icy, I needed a light to illuminate my path. I can only see directly in front of me.
One morning it reminded me of Psalm 119:105, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet.” A commentary says, “meaning that God’s word provides guidance and direction in life, helping us navigate through challenges and uncertainties. It symbolizes the idea that spiritual teachings illuminate our path, much like a lamp lights the way in darkness.”
But just like the lamps at the time this Psalm was written and the light I use, we cannot see that far ahead. Our limited minds must rely on God and His Word to help us take the next step. I must be patient and trust God’s direction to light my path and help me do the right next thing.
“God’s light will break in upon us, shining on those in the dark. Then showing us the way, one foot at a time, down the path of peace.” (Luke 1:79 [MSG])
I don’t need to extend myself so far out into the future. That just creates worry in my life. I need to leave the future in God’s capable hands, where it belongs. I don’t need to be self-sufficient. I need to be God-sufficient. That’s the best way to live.
God says, “Everything you need is to be found in Me. If you want to live well, make sure you understand this.” (Hosea 14:9)
I am so grateful when life’s little lessons point me to God and His glory. Once again, I stand in awe!

My grandson has started with four chickens (3 hens and a rooster). But in thinking about the light, I love the way you weaved the story, but I try to navigate with ambient light whenever possible, combination of boy scouts and the army, I guess, and when there is snow out, there is usually a lot of ambient light.
