Lent 2026 #3 Water’s Edge

I love how when you are paying attention, God puts things on your path to guide you. It can come from the most unlikely sources, but the key is to be aware.

We were watching an Alfred Hitchcock Hour show the other night entitled Water’s Edge. The main plot is two prison cellmates, Rusty and Mike, are talking and Mike tells the Rusty about his girlfriend. Mike then becomes ill with pneumonia and reveals to Rusty on his deathbed that he stashed $56,000 he had stolen. Rusty gets released and goes to the town where Helen, the girlfriend lives and the two of them track down where the money is hidden. They break into this secluded boat house and start looking around.

They find the box with the money and then each turns their back to the other. Rusty picks up a rock to hit Helen and knock her out, but Helen is faster and hits him with a prying iron. She then ties him up and starts stuffing the money in her pockets. As she begins walking out the door, he awakens. She is halfway out when he starts taunting her, saying mean things about her etc etc. She hesitates and turns back in to confront him and defend herself.

At this point I’m ready to shout out to her, “Don’t take offense! You are almost out the door! Keep going!”

As I’m fasting from offense during Lent, I am more aware of offense when I see it. No matter the source. That this message spoke to me from October 19, 1964 when this show first aired is amazing to me. God can and will use everything!

Well she gets close enough to him in their shouting match, and his kicks her, knocking her backwards, she falls and is fatally impaled on a pole. Now shes dead and so is he, because he cannot get untied.

Helen had the treasure but turned around, picked up offense with both hands, engaged in a shouting match and died. Rusty who started the shouting, also died.

Real life lesson is this: Don’t take up offense, it will kill you. Maybe not physically like in this show, but you will die spiritually, inside in your soul. Nothing is worth that. You don’t need to defend yourself, God will do that for you. Know that you carry the treasure of Jesus inside of you, so just walk away and live abundantly!

  1. This is spot on! I’m borrowing what you just said, “Fasting from offense”❣️ just what I needed to hear. Was moping under the moon, asking the Lord to please return NOW. 😅 . Blest, truly blest reading this one. Thank you🌱✝️🌿

  2. From my morning reading: “I well understand that you are amused by the slights you receive–even though they may come from influential enemies–as long as you can feel united to your God and your brothers in the apostolate. Slighted? So what!” (The Way #956, St. Josemaría Escríva)

Slighted? Offended? So what! Love one another, love your enemy.
