Seventh grade was eye opening for me. It was there I learned I love math and science. I also had an art teacher who opened up new horizons for my mind as well.
The class on perspective was fantastic. She gave us the instructions, and we had to make our own drawings using perspective.
Perspective is a way of creating the illusion of space, depth and scale in an artwork. It gives objects the appearance of receding into the distance, creating a realistic representation. Perspective can be achieved by manipulating the size and placement of objects within an image to create a sense of three-dimensional space. Linear perspective is a type of perspective that uses a mathematical system to create the illusion of depth in artwork. It relies on the artist’s understanding of how objects recede into the distance when viewed from one single point.
For me it was combining math and art together! Bonus!
My favorite example of art using perspective is Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. He was commissioned to do the end wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie church in Milan, Italy. He worked on The Last Supper from about 1495 to 1498.
If you look at the picture, you can see the single vocal point that is used for the perspective in painting is Jesus.
What a great example for us today. If we want to keep things in the proper perspective, we must keep Jesus as out focal point.
Hebrews 12:2, which encourages believers to look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of faith. Matthew 14:30 also shows us how focusing on Jesus helps us overcome challenges, as Peter walked on water when he kept his eyes on Him.
I have this in my journal from Jesus Calling May 22nd: “Don’t let the impact of this world shatter your thinking or draw you away from focusing on Me. Fix your eyes on Me, no matter what.”
So when we get distracted by the things in the periphery (things outside the boundaries or regions that are less important) we need to readjust our focus to Jesus, and bring our faith into the third dimension!
