Recently I had to take an earring to the jeweler, as the stone had fallen out of its setting. I was lucky that I did not lose the stone, but could have it put back into earrings I’ve had since the early 1990’s.
I love God’s timing. Just this morning I read this from Chuck Swindoll.
“Sound, sensible interpretation of the Scriptures included reading passages in context. Don’t pick verse 7 and ignore verses 1 through 6. A verse of Scripture is like a diamond that needs a setting. Without a setting, it’s loose, and you could lose it. But if you keep it in its setting, you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the gem.”
I’ve seen examples of this in conversations. They take the one verse they choose to stand on, but out of context, it becomes something to justify what they want to believe, and how to make themselves feel good about their behavior.
When I try to put it in context, they get upset and defensive. At that point, all I can do is pray, and give them over to God. For they do not want too see the truth in God’s Word.
I’m not going to argue. I don’t need to. What I need to do is pray, and set them down at the foot of the Cross. Sometimes, I need to realize it is not my burden to carry. I can’t make them change how they believe. I can do nothing about someone else’s choices. I’m leaving that up to God.
And nowadays, it seems to be more prevalent, people having relevant truths. “Well this my truth.” “It must be true, I saw it on social media.” Etc, etc, etc.
What we need to do is get back into the only real Source of Truth, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us as we read it, and enjoy the gems we find hidden there!

God Still Speaks 
Excellent points. Using Bible Gateway, it’s so easy to see a favorite verse in context, and likewise, it’s a simple task to see related verses. Like you said, some single verses withstand the test, and others do not. However, turning knowledge into wisdom depends on doing the work.

I get your point, but it reminds me of my late wife. She had some pieces of fine jewelry, but if something broke, to her it was wasted. All it needed was to be reattached to the setting. I think we are all guilty of taking things out of context, but I try to read the paragraph or the chapter. What is God’s purpose for having that verse where it is?
