Woebegone

I live in a small community in the Colorado Rockies. I was dumbfounded this week by the number of people who were woebegone over the U.S. mid-term elections. Defined, woebegone is feeling, showing, or expressing deep sorrow, or grief.

Some of their predictions of what the future is going to hold were grim. Skyrocketing prices. Martial law. Civil war. Christians being rounded up and put in interment camps. People coming to take your guns and ammo. This was to name a few.

But I did not join in their sorrow. Why? I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that none of what goes on in the world is a surprise to God. That and I’m old enough to have gone through these cycles before.

For example, back around 2008 there was similar talk about citizens losing their guns and ammo. Folks began stocking up on both. Nothing ever came of it.

Then in 2016 and 2024 same thing with putting people in interment camps. Or as the congress persons called them, “re-education camps.” 2016 was for being a Christian, 2024 was if you had voted for President Trump. Nothing ever came of it.

I remember laying in my warm bed, all snuggled in for the night, thinking to myself how silly it was, and I should I be enjoying my comforts right now and be grateful each day, just in case I am rounded up and hauled away to a camp? Heck no! Why worry about an event that may or may not happen?

But the thing is, even if it did or does happen, it does not matter. Because I know God loves me and will take care of me know matter what the outcome is. He have proven Himself faithful to me in the past, and I can trust Him do be faithful to me in the future. And if anything does happen to me, I know I shall be with Him for all eternity, so why worry?

“I can be full of joy here and now…so no matter what happens. I am able to hold my head high and know all is well, for I also know how dearly God loves me.” (Rom. 5:4-5)

That way I can be the light shining in the darkness to those around me who are woebegone, and exude the confidence of living, Woe, be gone!

  2. Amen, sister. Keep preaching this message. All these politicians talking about God, but it seems that nobody has faith in Him to care for His children.

  3. Brilliant devotional thoughts…I think that people have put way too much emotional investment in politics and an US vs Them mentality.
To avoid the “camps” from ever happening, which they probably won’t, we need to start talking to each other instead of building walls.

The ruling class of this world doesn’t ever want humanity to unite under our common humanity, so we are forced into tribal groups and political parties to keep us permanently divided and fighting with each other. I’m quite sick and tired of the whole charade.

All of this to keep humans from looking at the true source of evil: Satan himself.
And to keep us from keeping our hearts fixed on the true source of good: our great God.

Boy we need help in America.
This world needs a real Christian revival in the spirit of holiness.

  4. While I’m not pleased with the outcome of the elections, I’m not despondent. My job is to be an ambassador of Christ and to share the truth of God’s Word with people. I know how the story ends and I can remain confident that God is true to His word. Thanks for sharing your reflection on this, Cindi. Blessings 🙌

  5. It can be good to have a better balance of power. America is best represented by a cross-section of leaders who hold varying opinions and perspectives. Jesus Christ was not a Democrat or a Republican. Wait…He wasn’t even a U.S. citizen!?
I’m being silly for the sake of the perspective that salt and light is needed in any political climate. I don’t have to agree with you in order to learn from you.
